Are you still just prompting AI, or are you putting AI Agents to work?
)
Most of us are currently using AI like an on-demand assistant. You type in a question, and it gives you an answer. But the conversation is moving fast from simple prompts to AI Agents—and if you aren't looking at agents yet, you might be missing the real productivity shift.
Here is the quick breakdown of how I look at the two:
1. AI Prompts (The Chatbots)
- What it is: A single instruction or question you give to a tool like Gemini or ChatGPT.
- How it works: It’s a 1-to-1 interaction. You ask, it answers. If you want it to do more, you have to write another prompt. It’s brilliant for on-demand tasks.
- Best for: Brainstorming, drafting a quick email, summarizing a report, or quick Q&A.
2. AI Agents (The Workers)
- What it is: An autonomous system designed to achieve a specific goal without you holding its hand.
- How it works: You give it an objective—like asking it to research a list of prospective clients, find their current pain points, and draft a tailored pitch for each. The agent breaks that down into individual steps, uses web tools, reviews its own work, corrects its mistakes, and delivers the final result.
- Best for: Complex, multi-step workflows, continuous monitoring, and automated business processes.
The Key Difference: Control vs. Autonomy
- Prompts require you to manage the workflow. You are the project manager; the AI is the pen.
- Agents manage the workflow themselves. You define the outcome, and the AI acts as the project manager and the worker.
How to start thinking about Agents for your business
If you're wondering where this actually fits into your day-to-day, take a look at your calendar. Where are the bottlenecks?
- Is it manually cross-referencing spreadsheets?
- Is it triaging inbound customer queries and routing them?
- Is it tracking industry news and updating your team?
If a task requires steps, tools, and basic decision-making, it’s a prime candidate for an AI Agent. We are moving away from the era of just typing questions into a box and moving toward delegating actual outcomes.
